Controversial Costa seals win for Chelsea against Norwich

Chelsea beat Norwich in a controversial 2-1 win at Carrow Road after Diego Costa scoredfrom an offside position to claim the win for the Blues. The Canaries were undone by their own defensive failings – conceding after 39 seconds to Kenedy’s fastest goal of the Barclays Premier League season so far – and misfortune, as the victims of an incorrect decision by the match officials.

Costa’s strike before half-time should have been ruled out for offside, but assistant referee Michael McDonough failed to flag and the goal stood, despite protests as Norwich lost for the seventh time in eight Premier League games.

The Canaries ensured Chelsea never truly had a grip on proceedings. Cameron Jerome hit the bar early in the second half and Nathan Redmond pulled a goal back 22 minutes from time.

But Alex Neil’s men dropped into the relegation zone as Chelsea climbed to eighthwith a third straight league win.

Guus Hiddink remains unbeaten in domestic competition as Chelsea interim boss and Costa has now scored 10 goals in 14 games under the Dutchman.

Chelsea made four changes following the win at Southampton and Norwich made one of the incomers particularly welcome in the opening minute.

Eden Hazard ran at Norwich and switched ball left for Kenedy, who cut in and was allowed to make space to shoot. After Ivo Pinto, Alex Tettey and Ryan Bennett failed to shut him down, the Brazilian fired a low effort into the bottom corner across goal.

Chelsea threatened to score another, with Hazard revelling in the open start. The Belgium playmaker pulled the ball back for Bertrand Traore, on his first start, but it was just behind the forward.

The game continued to be open and Jerome headed the ball on to the roof of the net from Wes Hoolahan’s cross.

Gary O’Neil came on for Tettey, who hobbled off after an ineffective 36 minutes, and provided more stability, but still Norwich were vulnerable.

Hazard tried to fashion a second for Traore, but the 20-year-old, who had scored on his last three substitute appearances, took a heavy touch and John Ruddy picked it up.

Norwich supporters were incensed when Thibaut Courtois picked up the ball soon afterwards, from Gary Cahill’s pass-back. What the home faithful did not see, but referee Lee Mason did, was that the ball deflected off Jerome.

The Canaries had a more legitimate reason to feel aggrieved when Cesc Fabregas took aquick throw to Traore and he found Costa, who peeled round to collect the ball before clipping it over Ruddy. Replays showed Costa was clearly offside.

Jerome spurned a fine opportunity to pull a goal back when Hoolahan crossed and Russell Martin headed the ball back in front of goal. Jerome was unmarked when, with the ball at a difficult height, he swivelled and hit it left-footed on to the bar.

Hiddink sent on John Obi Mikel for Oscar and Willian for Traore.

But the control he sought was lacking and it was soon 2-1 as Redmond ran in behind Kenedy and latched on to a Hoolahan pass before rifling past Courtois.

Kenedy was immediately withdrawn by Hiddink, with Baba Rahman back into the fray following his half-time substitution at Southampton.

Redmond twice went close and Costa slid the ball wide at the other end as Chelsea held on.

Leicester players will ‘never give up’, says Ranieri

Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri has vowed that his players “will never give up” after dropping vital points in the Premier League title race in a 2-2 draw against West Brom. The Baggies took the lead in the first half through striker Salomon Rondon, but the Foxesfought back in typical fashion when a Danny Drinkwater strike and a wonderful curling effort from Andy King put them in thelead.

Craig Gardner then scored a inch-perfect free-kick in the second half to secure a point for Tony Pulis’ side, meaning Premier Leagueleaders Leicester dropped two vital points in their title fight.

But manager Ranieri claims he is “very pleased” with his teams performance, and has vowed that his players will “never give up” in their bid to become Premier League champions.

Speaking after the game, the Italian said: “I am very pleased with our performance. They played so well, there was no panic after the first goal.

“We played much better than against Norwich. I am satisfied with the performance. Just sometimes you can do everything but the ball doesn’t want to go in.

“I want to create a lot of chances and sooneror later we score. Tonight wasn’t the right moment but we are alive and we fight to the end. Everybody is ready to fight, to play well, to create chances. Only the victory was missing.”

Asked whether he was disappointed with theresult, Ranieri remained positive with his team’s performance.

“Nothing negative,” said Ranieri. “We tried to do everything and well done to my players. I love this, we never never give up.

“We always try the best in every situation. Every team plays football and we have to find the solution and try to win. It is important not to lose the match too as they could have counter attacked.

“We believe in ourselves. It is the same, I don’t see the title. I just watch my team. We must believe until the end, every match is important for us to understand what we can do in our life.”

Beans doesn’t make people tall: We have often heard parent instruct their kids to eat beans because it will make them grow. This is false because height is majorly a genetic factor. Environmental factors such as nutrition, exercise, and any underlying health problems also play a great role.

Salting beans: Anyone who grew up in Nigeria has probably heard that adding salt to beans at the beginning when cooking beans can make it tough. However, there are many opinions about when to add salt to a pot of simmering beans. Some experts say to wait until the beans soften otherwise the beans won’t cook through. Others advise adding the salt right at the beginning of the cooking in order to season the beans throughand through. On this one we are divided.

– Beans are a good source of fibre, vitamin C, folate(one of the eight vitamins in the B group) which keeps your blood healthy and helps you grow. It’s especially important for mums to get enough folate at the beginning of a pregnancy to help prevent some birth defects in the baby.

– Most beans contain at least 20% protein and are high in carbohydrates which provides long-lasting energy.

– Some ancient cults who believed in reincarnation, most notably the monastic followers of Pythagoras thought human souls traveled through the stems of bean plants to Hades, where they were then transmogrified for their next lives; it was therefore a sin to eat beans or even walk among bean plants.

Court Orders Release of Jonathan’s ADC

A Federal High Court in Abuja says the detention of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s ADC by the EFCC without trial is unlawful and that he should be released immediately.

According to Trial Judge, Yusuf Halilu, the EFCC is a statutory government agency set up to save the country from corrupt practices and not to serve as a holding prison for the Nigerian Army under which Colonel Adegbe is still serving.

Justice Halilu ordered the EFCC to releasehim immediately until it is ready to arraign him before a competent court of jurisdiction.

According to him, a situation where a suspect is perpetually kept in custody at the wimps and caprices of the anti-graft agency is against the law.

Justice Halilu, however, struck out two other reliefs sought by Colonel Adegbe asking the EFCC to apologize and pay him 100 million Naira in damages on the grounds that Colonel Adegbe is a serving officer in the Nigerian Army.

Counsel to the former ADC, Mr Ogwu Onoja, had approached the Federal High Court to enforce the fundamental human rights of his client whom he said was still in detention with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) since his arrest two weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, the EFCC filed a 19-page counter affidavit urging the court to dismiss the application, as the applicant’s detention was at the instance of his employer.

Counsel to the applicant however insisted that the fundamental human rights of his client had been violated, irrespective of who he was in their custody.
